This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Josh McFarland (JMCX) from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Josh McFarland (JMCX) is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Josh McFarland (JMCX) – based out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and serving PA, NJ, DE, and beyond – has always gravitated toward fun, high-energy music, and that passion ultimately shaped the foundation of his career. While many DJs begin with live events and later explore production, McFarland took the opposite route – building his musical skillset through production first, then stepping into DJing with a deeper understanding of sound and performance.
Over time, he sharpened both the technical side of his craft and the ability to read a room, turning his talents into a thriving business that spans weddings, corporate events, private functions, and nightclub settings. As a mobile DJ, McFarland thrives on adaptability and the challenge of creating something unique from scratch in every new environment. He sees each event as its own blank canvas, requiring not only strong technical execution but emotional awareness and real-time decision-making.

When DJ LIFE spoke with McFarland regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Josh McFarland: I’ve always been drawn to fun, high-energy music. What started as a passion for music led me into production, which then naturally evolved into DJing events.
For many DJs, it happens in reverse—they start DJing and then move into production. For me, having that musical foundation helped me transition into live performance more intentionally. Over time, I developed both the technical skills and the ability to read a crowd, which grew into a business performing at weddings, corporate events, private functions, and nightclubs.
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
McFarland: Being a mobile DJ means having the ability to walk into any environment and create an experience from the ground up. Every event is different, and it’s my job to read the room and build something unforgettable in real time.
I love that it blends technical skill with emotional awareness. I’m not just playing music—I’m shaping moments that people will remember for years, whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or celebration of life.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
McFarland: My setup is built around reliability, clean sound, and flexibility depending on the event.
I currently run a system centered around QSC K12.2 speakers, along with a K8.2, which have become my standard for clarity, power, and consistency across a wide range of venues. Whether I’m in a ballroom, outdoor space, or corporate setting, I know I can trust the sound to translate exactly how I intend. As a bonus, I also use the DSP “STUDIO MON” mode when producing and checking mixes in the studio.
On the DJ side, I use a Roland DJ-707M controller integrated with Serato, paired with a Shure SM58 microphone and a custom-spec laptop. I also incorporate a clean, professional facade to elevate the overall presentation. Creating a polished, high-end look that matches the sound quality is a big priority for me.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
McFarland: My dream setup would include an AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ, paired with QSC KS118 subs for added low-end impact.
From a production standpoint, I’d also incorporate lasers and atmospheric effects like fog to create a more immersive, high-energy environment—something that feels less like a standard DJ setup and more like a full-scale experience.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
McFarland: One of the biggest pros is the variety. No two events are the same, which keeps things exciting. I’m constantly meeting new people, working in different environments, and creating unique experiences.
A challenge can be the physical and logistical demands—transporting gear, long hours, and adapting quickly to different setups. But that’s also part of what makes it rewarding. It pushes you to be efficient, resilient, and solution-oriented.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
McFarland: One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone makes a song request right in the middle of a transition.
Timing is everything when you’re managing energy on the dance floor, and those moments require focus. That said, I always appreciate requests—it’s just all about when and how they come in.
