This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ Legend (Jerry Cummings) of DJ Legend Entertainment from NY & SC.
DJ Legend is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Jerry Cummings (aka DJ Legend) of DJ Legend Entertainment, based out of New York and South Carolina. Jerry Cummings brings passion, professionalism, and versatility to every event he plays. First inspired as a teenager by watching friends DJ and growing up surrounded by music at home, his connection to sound started early and evolved naturally into a career rooted in experience and dedication.
As a mobile DJ, Jerry focuses on more than just song selection. From sound and lighting to hosting and crowd engagement, his approach is centered on reading the room and delivering a high-energy, seamless experience that turns any venue into a memorable celebration.
When DJ LIFE spoke with Cummings regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Jerry Cummings: I got started by watching some of my friends DJ when I was 16. I’ve always had a love for music, especially from listening to my dad play songs on his component system—LOL.
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Cummings: Being a mobile DJ is more than just playing music—it’s about creating unforgettable experiences wherever the celebration happens. I bring the energy, the sound, and the atmosphere to transform any space into a memorable event.
As a mobile DJ, I provide more than just a plug and a playlist. I deliver professional sound, lighting, and hosting that set the perfect tone for every moment. My goal is to read the crowd, keep the energy alive, and make sure every guest feels part of the experience.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Cummings: My current setup varies depending on the venue size and crowd. For large venues, I use KLA systems and 181 subs. For medium venues, I use KC12s. For small venues, I use K12.2s and 112s.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Cummings: My dream setup would be the L Class LA112 line array paired with LS118 subs.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Cummings: The QSC KC12s.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
Cummings:
Pros:
- Flexibility and independence—you control your schedule, the types of events you take, and how you run your business.
- Variety of events—weddings, corporate parties, birthdays, clubs, and school dances keep things fresh.
- High demand—good DJs are always in demand, especially for weddings and private events.
- Strong earning potential with the right branding, skills, and reputation.
- Creative outlet—you get to mix music, read the crowd, and create energy that transforms an event.
- Networking opportunities with clients, venues, and other vendors that can lead to repeat business.
- Personal satisfaction—watching a crowd dance and knowing you made the event memorable is deeply rewarding.
Cons:
- Heavy equipment and setup—you haul, set up, and break down speakers, lights, and gear, often by yourself.
- Unpredictable hours—nights, weekends, and holidays can affect work-life balance.
- Pressure and responsibility—if something goes wrong, the spotlight is on you.
- Physical demands—late nights, loud music, and constant lifting can take a toll over time.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Cummings: People trying to have a conversation with me while I’m in my zone, requesting songs I was about to play anyway, and asking me to turn the volume down.
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal and family life?
Cummings: Being a DJ has had a big impact on my personal and family life. On the positive side, it gives me a sense of pride knowing I’m doing something I love while creating memories for others. My family sees the passion I put into my work, and that inspires them. It’s also been a financial blessing, helping support my household and creating opportunities we might not have had otherwise.
At the same time, it hasn’t been without challenges. Most of my work happens on weekends and late nights, which means missing some family moments. The long hours and travel can be draining, but I’ve learned to manage it by setting boundaries, involving my family where I can, and making the time we do spend together really count.
