DJ Jeff Greene [Mobile Monday Spotlight]

This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ Jeff Greene of 84 West Events from Miami & South Florida.

DJ Jeff Greene is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Jeff Greene of 84 West Events is based out of Miami & South Florida. For Jeff Greene, being a mobile DJ isn’t just a career – it’s been a lifelong journey that began at only 14 years old and has evolved into a legacy spanning nearly five decades. What started with a passion for disco, dancing, and early exposure to professional DJ gear quickly turned into real-world opportunities, mentorship, and paid gigs at an age when most people were still figuring out what they wanted to do. That early start instilled in Greene a deep respect for professionalism, presentation, and quality, all of which continue to define his approach today.

Now serving the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach markets with 84 West Events, Greene has built a reputation rooted in experience, technical mastery, and production-level execution. From working internationally to supporting events for everyday clients and global figures alike, his career has been shaped by understanding how to control the energy of a room, manage event flow, and deliver a seamless guest experience through sound, lighting, and AV.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Greene regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…

DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
DJ Jeff Greene: My family loved to dance, so when disco music hit, my sister and I became dance partners and practiced at home. We went on to win dance contests in local nightclubs around Miami and Fort Lauderdale (although we were in our teens, we are both tall and got into clubs easily). We even danced on a nationally televised dance show. A neighbor who worked for Warner Brothers used to have parties in her house and knew of my sister and my dancing, so she would ask us if we could teach disco dances to party guests. She had a friend who was a DJ and who played for her parties. In between dances, I’d hang out with the DJ, curious about the gear. He taught me to DJ and then hired me—at only 14 years old—to be his assistant and teach dances at parties. After a few months, he suggested that I should get my own gear and start DJing parties. After I turned 15, I got my first DJ setup with all professional club-level gear, complete with road cases. Starting out with that level of quality gear and making money with it taught me the value of looking and being professional—something I value to this day and is a bedrock of our company: professionalism.

DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Greene: It’s been my life, literally. I started in this business when I was 14, and now I’m almost 62. DJing has brought me so many great memories, both that I helped to create and memories that I could be a part of. I’ve worked in eight different countries as an event DJ and have been a DJ or provided AV services for all types of people, from everyday clients to high-profile celebrities, music artists, Presidents, Vice Presidents, royalty, even the Dalai Lama!

DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Greene: My personal DJ system includes a Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT, two Sennheiser wireless mics, Pioneer headphones, two QSC K12.2, and depending on the event, two QSC K212C or two QSC KSub. (In my company, we own four K12 and six K12.2 and just purchased a set of KC-12 in white.)

DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Greene: We have line arrays that we have been using for our larger corporate events for 2+ decades. I love the versatility and scalability of line arrays. I believe that our industry is maturing more each year and line arrays are becoming more mobile DJ-friendly. My dream audio setup would include a setup like I use now, but with the addition of a pair of powered line array subs and a pair of powered line array tops per side. I like how big-room audio sounds on any events—powerful but not noisy or harsh—line arrays have the ability to drive that sound and energy on the dance floor. My setup would (often does) include an LED video wall and LED DJ booth setup with additional LED wall columns, and I would play music videos and visuals to create a more club-like performance. Virtual DJ handles that so flawlessly. For lighting, four to six movers make for a nice light show.

DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Greene: As I mentioned above, we just purchased our first set of white QSC KC-12 speakers. Column arrays provide a nice sound balance in a room, similar to what larger line arrays provide, but ideal for typical events. Even though other vendors have similar column array speakers, I’ve been disappointed in the quality of their sound, especially when an MC is working the mic. QSC’s KC-12 is really the first set in that style of speaker to not shut down the sound when the party energy really needs to build up the energy.

DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
    Greene:

    • Pros: I don’t just play music, I understand event flow, energy arcs, timing, and production. At life events, pacing matters more than just beat-matching. Plus, I have an elevated level of comfort with audio, lighting, AV, and gear associated with all of those, so I can assure my clients have fewer or no surprises and more confidence in the success of their events. It’s my experience of almost five decades that lets me be my best, and that carries through to our staff with proper training and the knowledge that I can help them gain from those experiences that only time provides. Plus, I’m a hell of a dancer (seriously), and I believe that lends to being a better DJ and MC. In one sentence, I elevate the guest experience at events.
    • Cons: Load-ins, load-outs, long days, and late nights.

DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Greene: YES! Many of today’s DJs. I’ve really been fortunate to grow up with this industry, to be one of the industry’s originators steering its direction and to experience the many transitions we’ve taken from the days of turntables and vinyl records and record store runs, heavy amp racks (I had QSC amps back in the 80’s) and speakers, to where we are today with fancy lightweight digital gear. But what troubles me the most is how so many DJs today cut corners when it comes to music and education. For music, if you’re a pro DJ, for Pete’s sake, subscribe to a professional DJ music service—don’t download and convert music from YouTube. Do it the right way, please. For education, DJs are supposed to be the new rock star, right? But the general public still thinks of a mobile DJ as a joke job, or a side hustle.

As an industry participant, you owe it to yourself to educate yourself and collaborate with others, and the best way to do that is at DJ conventions and conferences—online is just so full of noise—but every DJ convention or conference you attend, you will walk away with real tangible knowledge and takeaways that will pay back 10x, 20x, up to 100x your investment to attend. If you don’t attend these trade shows for DJs and you don’t really want to help the industry gain more respect and professional acknowledgement, then just leave DJing to those who are trying to lift our industry. Photographers, videographers, event planners, decorators all have trade shows and educational conferences too, and they are viewed as professional services that no one believes is their side hustle. There are excellent national mobile DJ industry conferences from coast to coast—Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlantic City—that are really worth attending. One has to be near you. Go and grow!

How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Greene: As I answered in my first response, it is my life, and as such my entire family has been a part of that journey. First off, 10 years after I started DJing, I got married to a brilliant woman with a C-suite job. After our second child was born, she decided to join the company, and to this day, is my business partner too. My kids grew up in this business and learned how to entertain and engage with people. Today, that experience has helped both of them (in their 30’s now) be well respected and at the top of their fields. My proudest moment early in this business was when my father—who used to say, “Finish college, you’re not going to be a DJ at 30”—while speaking at a conference he was producing and I did all the AV, turned to his international audience of several hundred people and proudly said, “I want everyone here to know that all the production this week and the entertainment has been provided by my son, his employees, and his company. I’m so proud of what he has done here.”

That was 1985, and it was the first time my father realized that the company he helped me set up (he was an attorney) was truly a real business. Although he was always supportive of my endeavor, he didn’t see it as something with a future. But after I produced a professional-level production, he realized that I had a vision he couldn’t see. Before he passed away, he got to see us doing many high-profile events locally and even do a few internationally. He was very proud. Mom (a doctor) always had faith in my pursuits.
