    DJ K-SLY [Mobile Monday Spotlight]

This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ K-SLY (Kathy Taylor) from Los Angeles.

DJ K-SLY (aka Kathy Taylor) is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, K-SLY is a mobile DJ based out of Los Angeles, California. For DJ K-SLY, the path to DJing began with pure obsession with music and the feeling of watching people connect on a dance floor. Inspired early on by DJs who made turntablism feel like magic, she gravitated toward the craft long before there were tutorials, courses, or easy entry points.

With a background in piano and violin, she translated musical instinct into hands-on experimentation, teaching herself to mix on her mom’s turntables and making mixtapes for friends while still young. That passion quickly evolved into way more – and now, just fast-forward to today. Fascinated by radio and music television, she set her sights early on a life immersed in sound and culture.

Upon arriving at Kansas State University, she went straight to the campus radio station to secure an on-air role, setting the tone for what would become a lifelong career spanning radio, events, and performance. Over time, that journey naturally expanded into mobile DJing, where she discovered a space that values adaptability, preparation, and connection over ego.

DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
DJ K-SLY: I started the way a lot of us did: music obsession. I was also in love with the magic when people vibe together. Watching people like Jam Master Jay, Spinderella, and DJ Scratch flipped a switch in my brain.

As a kid, I played piano and violin. DJing wasn’t considered a long-term career yet, but I knew it would become one. I felt it. There weren’t DJ classes or online tutorials, so I would sneak to practice at home using my piano and violin skills on my mom’s turntables and make mixtapes for friends.

I was also infatuated with the radio and music channels like MTV. At 15, I told myself that I’d be on radio, TV, and parties. The day that I enrolled at Kansas State University, I went straight to the school’s radio station and solidified an on-air spot. It was ON ever since.

DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
DJ K-SLY: Besides the basics, I’ve found that mobile DJing takes an insane amount of stamina and adaptability. Also, events are like a history lesson because you’re guaranteed to have at least three generations to cater to.

It’s just as much about service as it is showmanship. The biggest difference coming from my DJ background is that it’s less ego, more execution and freedom. That’s one of the reasons that I pivoted to mobile DJing.

DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
DJ K-SLY: I run QSC KC12 speakers as my core sound. They translate everything—from hip-hop to house. I need clarity with range for every kind of event, from intimate to high energy. The KC12s give me both.

My controller is the Rane Performer. That thing is a weapon. It bridges my style with all the new bells and whistles. Fluid and beautiful.

I don’t overcomplicate gear. Clean signal chain. Solid QSC mixer. Reliable Sennheiser wireless mics. Shure wired mic. Zero drama. And I double up on everything from cables (like Mogami), a shock-proof power strip, extra QSC speaker power plugs, laptop chargers, SSD music drive, spare controller and laptop, TIDAL DJ-integrated streaming (hands down the best), etc.

Your gear has to travel, set up fast, sound elite, and never do you dirty.

DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
DJ K-SLY: My dream would be to have a robot to set up all the gear for me! 😜

Aside from my current rig, KC12s, I’d love to stack them with subs for bigger rooms, a fully dialed monitoring setup, and a booth that feels like a luxury studio to truly feel in my element.

I have my eyes on the QSC CB10s. They’re LOUD, lighter, and more compact. Small, but MIGHTY like me.

I’d add a custom DJ desk with built-in cable management and power, a travel-friendly lighting and visuals package, and a redundant playback system so I’m bulletproof. The goal is: load in, plug in, flip a couple of switches, and the entire space instantly feels like a curated, high-end experience.

Also, I’m looking for better headphones. After years of spinning, certain frequencies are dulled or gone. Poof! 😆

At the end of the day, as long as guests are screaming lyrics and dancing together instead of staring at me, I’m winning.

DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
DJ K-SLY: Right now, the Rane Performer has me inspired again. There’s a connection in the feel, especially coming from a vinyl foundation. That nostalgia and physical connection matters in how you cut, blend, and overall performance.

I had purchased great speakers a year prior to buying my QSCs, and now only use the KC12s. They’re compact and have clarity, which equals emotional response on the floor. That’s physics and psychology at work.

I have an MPC Live II that I sat on for a few years until recently. I plan to integrate it into my gigs. I know they’ve released a newer one, but it’s still incredible.

DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
    DJ K-SLY:
Pros: You master versatility by growing a deeper understanding of the business of DJing—gaining real business skills. No club politics or gatekeeping. The biggest pro is freedom. Every event is a different story, and that’s what keeps me hyped.

Cons: Any and all things organization. Social media marketing. Load-ins. Load-outs. The cost of paid subscriptions and new gear. Wear and tear—my back and knees. And sometimes, the lack of respect or underestimation from those who don’t understand the complexity of mobile DJing.

DJ LIFE: Any DJ-related pet peeves?
    DJ K-SLY:

    • Clients who think a high follower count legitimizes a DJ (and hires accordingly). It truly hurts those who have dedicated themselves to the craft and are incredible DJs.
    • Asking me to charge phones. Power banks are cheap, portable, and compact.
    • No reliable dedicated power outlet at an event.
    • Grumpy people. Always looking for something to be mad about. Total vibe killers.
    • DJs who complain about playing certain songs while cashing checks.

DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?

DJ K-SLY: It has shaped everything. I’ve spun for more than half my life.

Having done radio, TV, clubs, and events, industry politics can burn you out. I had no balance during those times, so it was inevitable.

I’ve learned resilience as a DJ, but motherhood has taught me balance and intention. You learn to trim the fluff.

Mobile DJing gives me more flexibility, healthier environments, and stronger margins.

My kids see that you don’t have to give up your dream when creating a family. They see preparation. They see discipline and work ethic.
