    DJ ONIX [Mobile Monday Spotlight]

This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ ONIX from Cleveland, Ohio.

DJ ONIX is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, DJ ONIX is a mobile DJ based out of Cleveland, Ohio. For DJ ONIX, music has never been just a job – it’s been a lifelong calling that began in Puerto Rico and now thrives in Cleveland, Ohio.

What started in 2005 as a curious kid pushing the wrong buttons on his father’s sound equipment quickly grew into a passion shaped by trial, error, and determination. From neighborhood parties to college events like Puerto Rico’s massive “Las Justas,” ONIX built his craft through years of learning, experimenting, and refusing to give up – even when only two couples danced at his very first event. Two decades later, those early challenges have become the foundation of a career rooted in resilience and love for the art of DJing.

These days, DJ ONIX brings that same heart and dedication to every wedding, birthday, church event, and community celebration he touches. Now based in Cleveland, he continues to expand his reach with a signature blend of energy, connection, and professionalism. His work is deeply personal – and a way to meet new people, support families, and be part of milestones that stay with clients forever.

When DJ LIFE spoke with DJ ONIX regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…

DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
DJ ONIX: I started in 2005 in Puerto Rico. I was with my dad, who was a sound engineer, and I was just pushing buttons. My dad kept getting mad at me because I was messing up the setup. A couple of years later, he taught me the difference between each button and what they do. His friends also taught me on the side. I started doing small parties around the neighborhood and getting comfortable. One day, my dad sent me to do an event on my own. He gave me the equipment and waited for me to figure out how to use it. At some point, I couldn’t figure it out because I forgot about a specific button. When I called my dad, he started laughing because he knew I would forget.

After struggling with the equipment, I was sad because only two couples danced the whole night. But that inspired me to do better and work harder. Time passed, and I kept learning how to mix, expanding my playlist, and learning more about the equipment. Now, 20 years later, I can say I love what I do, and those experiences have shaped my life.

DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
DJ ONIX: For me, this is more than a job. DJing has made a big impact on my life. It’s a lifestyle — not just a way to make money, but a way to meet people and be part of their special moments. I’ve done birthdays, weddings, gender reveals, baby showers, discotheques, and church events. Not only in Ohio — I’ve also worked special events in Puerto Rico, including “Las Justas,” which is a huge college event. That experience inspired me to keep going. Being a DJ means connecting with families and creating long-lasting connections

DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup? What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
DJ ONIX: My current setup includes a Denon DJ MCX8000, (2) QSC K10.2 and (2) QSC KS112 speakers, a custom DJ booth with a TV stand, a black Chauvet GigBAR Flex, a smoke machine, (2) ProX Flex Totems, four moving LED heads, and two wireless microphones.

My dream setup would be a QSC line array, LED walls, a big custom booth with big screens, and a Denon DJ SC Live 4 standalone controller — something I can use to really benefit my customers.

DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
DJ ONIX: Pros? Being able to control my schedule and my time. Meeting new people and creating unforgettable memories and relationships with my clients. Traveling and showing my family what my passion is.

Cons? Outdoor events when it starts raining and there’s nowhere to protect my equipment. That taught me to always bring something to cover my gear.

DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
DJ ONIX: Being a DJ has given me the freedom to control my schedule, which means more time with my family and the ability to be present for my child’s school events and special moments. I started my journey in Puerto Rico in 2005, and now I’m in Cleveland, Ohio. Moving here has helped me grow my career and experience as a DJ, and it has also given me opportunities to help nonprofit organizations and community groups.
