DJ Ash Sydney [Mobile Monday Spotlight]

This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ Ash Sydney from Sydney, Australia.

DJ Ash Sydney is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Ash is a mobile DJ based out of Sydney, Australia. From loading gear as a kid to commanding dance floors with confidence and clarity, DJ Ash Sydney’s journey into DJing is rooted in both family influence and a deep love for sound.

Raised around audio gear and inspired by watching his older brother work the decks, Ash found his calling early – captivated by the power one DJ has to transform a room and create unforgettable moments.

Now, firmly established as a mobile DJ, Ash brings an open-format mindset, polished presentation, and carefully curated sound to every event he plays. With an eye for gear that delivers both performance and aesthetics, and a passion for reading the crowd no matter the setting, DJ Ash Sydney continues to build a brand that’s as intentional as it is impactful.

When DJ LIFE spoke with DJ Ash Sydney regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…

DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
DJ Ash Sydney: My dad was always into audio and video, so music and sound were kind of in our house from day one. He got my older brother, DJ Andy, into DJing first, and I naturally followed behind him. When I was a kid, I’d be there loading and unloading his gear, just watching everything.

But the moment that really hit me was seeing how one person standing behind a set of decks could control the whole room. The way a crowd lights up, the way people forget their problems for a few hours. I remember standing on the side thinking, “I want to do that. I want to make people feel that way with my music.”
That feeling stuck with me. That’s really where my journey started.

DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
DJ Ash Sydney: Being a mobile DJ means a lot to me. I love being able to rock up anywhere and bring the vibe to the room. Every crowd is different, every night is different, and that’s what I love about it. I’m all about mixing all kinds of genres too. Being an open-format DJ keeps it fun for me and for the crowd. I just enjoy reading the room and giving people a good time, no matter where I’m playing.

DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
DJ Ash Sydney: My current setup is simple but powerful. I run a Traktor S4 MK3 for my mixing, but the real stars of my rig are my white QSC KC12 speakers. They look clean, they sound incredible, and honestly, I get complimented at every single event. Wedding planners, venue managers, photographers—everyone always asks about my speakers.
They pump unbelievably well for their size, and the clarity means I can fill a room without overpowering it. They’ve become a big part of my brand because people notice them before I even start playing, and they definitely deliver once the music hits.

DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
DJ Ash Sydney: My dream setup would be on another level. For sound, I’d go straight to the QSC L Class series. Those things are monsters—the clarity, the punch, everything about them is next level.
And for mixing, I’d love a pair of CDJ-3000s with the A9 mixer. That’s the proper club-standard setup you see in all the big venues. It’s clean, smooth, and just makes everything look professional.

DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear you’re currently using?
DJ Ash Sydney: The new gear I picked up recently is the Traktor X2 and the QSC KC12s. The X2 is just for home practice so I can get used to the new Traktor layout. I’m actually waiting on the X4, which will be my main unit for events—I just wanted a head start with the new workflow.

I’ve also started using the QSC KC12s, replacing my K12.2s. I still use the K12.2s for corporate or more casual gigs, but moving forward I’m planning on grabbing a black pair of KC12s as well.

DJ LIFE: What are the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
    DJ Ash Sydney:

Pros: Honestly, the best part about being a mobile DJ is the freedom. Every gig is different—new spots, new crowds, new energy—and I love rocking up with my own setup and making the room come alive. When you lock in with the crowd and everyone’s vibing, nothing beats that feeling. Plus, I get to choose my own gear, my own sound, my own style. That’s the fun part.

Cons: The only downside is the grind behind it. As a mobile DJ, you’re doing everything yourself—loading the car, unloading, setting up, packing down, dealing with random venue layouts and last-minute changes. It’s a lot sometimes. You’re basically the DJ, the roadie, and the tech. But hey, that’s part of the game.

DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
DJ Ash Sydney: People putting their drinks near my gear or on top of my subs—that’s definitely one of my biggest pet peeves.
