This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on DJ Mike Melice from Central New York.
DJ Mike Melice is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Melice is a mobile DJ based out of Ithaca, New York. For Mike Melice, being a mobile and destination wedding DJ is far more than a career – it’s the realization of a passion that began in high school and has since taken him around the world. What started with burning CDs for classmates turned into a full-fledged journey through nightclubs, late nights, and multiple day jobs before evolving into a thriving business that now allows him to provide for his family, travel, and perform at breathtaking venues.
Through opportunities like destination weddings in places such as Tuscany serve as constant reminders of how far this path has taken him. Today, he embraces the creative freedom his work provides while delivering unforgettable experiences for couples throughout New York and beyond.
Melice’s approach is rooted in equal parts musical expertise and technological innovation. He’s known for elevating celebrations with enhancements that blend nightclub energy with immersive production – cold sparks, lighting design, projection mapping, CO2 cannons, and more. Combining his nightclub background with a love for cutting-edge gear, Mike has built a reputation for crafting events that feel both well-polished and deeply personal.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Melice regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Mike Melice: Being both a mobile and destination wedding DJ has been a true blessing. I actually started out DJing nightclubs while holding down one—and sometimes two—full-time jobs. Now, I’m fortunate to do what I love for a living, with full creative control. It gives me more time with my family, while also letting me travel and see the world.
Just recently, a wedding planner from the UK reached out about a wedding in Tuscany, Italy—opportunities like that remind me how far this journey has come. I always tell my clients I have the best job in the world: I get to pursue my passion, invest in fun gear, DJ for the coolest people at the most beautiful venues in New York and beyond, and often get fed steak and cake while doing it.
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Melice: I actually started back in high school. I was the kid burning CDs for all the smart kids in exchange for homework. That side hustle turned into a real passion, and it wasn’t long before I moved from making mixes to playing them live. What started as a fun trade quickly became the foundation for the career I have today.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Melice: I actually run two different setups, depending on the look and aesthetic my clients are going for. I own QSC KC12 speakers in both black and white, which gives me the versatility to match any event style. On the DJ side, I’m a big Pioneer fan—my go-tos are the Rev7 or the CDJ-3000s paired with an S11 mixer.
For microphones, I use Shure SLXD Beta 58s and bodypacks, which are perfect for everything from speeches to connecting live musicians with instrument mics or 1/4” jacks. And one of my all-time favorite pieces of gear is my QSC TouchMix-8 digital mixer. I bought my first one over 10 years ago and now I own three—the flexibility it gives me has been a complete game changer.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Melice: For me, the dream setup would be modular. Instead of buying one big controller with fixed decks and a mixer, I’d love to see a system built with magnetic attachments—so you could swap out decks, mixers, pads, and knobs, customizing it for each gig and packing it much easier for travel.
The same concept could apply to speakers. Imagine a column array where you could just swap the subwoofer size—say, upgrading to a 15” sub for the KC12 tops—without having to buy a whole new system. There are a few smaller companies experimenting with this idea, but if the big manufacturers embraced modular designs, it would totally change the game for mobile and destination DJs.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
Melice: There are definitely more pros than cons. I get to travel, make my own schedule, play with incredible gear, and build lasting connections with amazing clients. The downside is mostly the behind-the-scenes work—things like bookkeeping, navigating bad floor plans, or missing my daughter’s recital because of a wedding gig. But overall, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The energy of a packed dance floor makes it all worthwhile.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Melice: One of my biggest pet peeves is when people refuse to listen to anything new. Especially with some in the boomer generation—many haven’t added a single new track to their playlist since the early ’90s, yet still expect to hear “Celebration” or “We Are Family” at weddings. The funny thing is most of my couples now actually put those songs on the Do Not Play list.
We’re at a point where there’s a whole generation that hasn’t kept up with new music for 30+ years. Don’t get me wrong—the ’80s were amazing, and I get the nostalgia—but today’s couples were born in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their idea of wedding anthems is very different, and as a DJ, staying current is key.
