This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Steve Dub from Los Angeles, California.
Steve Dub is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Steve is a mobile DJ based out of Los Angeles, California. LA-based DJ and turntablist Steve Dub has spent nearly two decades mastering his craft behind the decks. With an 18-year career that’s taken him from radio airwaves to international stages, Steve has built a name synonymous with versatility and precision.
Prior to the pandemic, he served as an on-air mixer for the legendary 93.5 KDAY – the world’s first all-hip-hop radio station – helping define the sound of Los Angeles hip-hop. His mixes have since reached audiences worldwide through appearances on Club Killers Radio and DJcity Podcast, while also landing features on L.A.’s 90.7 KPFK.
When he’s not rocking packed nightclubs across cities like Seattle, New York, and Miami, Steve Dub is commanding dance floors at weddings, fashion events, and corporate activations for major brands such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Ave., and The Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Whether spinning vinyl, digital, or his signature 7-inch sets, Steve’s approach remains rooted in passion and adaptability.

DJ LIFE spoke with Steve regarding all things mobile DJ, and here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Steve Dub: Being a mobile DJ means freedom, flexibility, and connection. I’m not tied to one venue, and I get to bring the party wherever it’s needed, whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or house party. It’s more than just playing music—it’s about creating memorable experiences and adapting to each unique crowd and environment.
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Steve Dub: I was always heavy into music as a kid. I would save up my allowance to purchase the new albums that would drop every week. Eventually, I had so much music that my neighbors would ask me to come over to play my CDs for their parties. This was before I even knew what a DJ was and years before I actually became one, which happened around senior year of high school. A friend of mine got a set of cheap turntables and a mixer, and we were both hooked. From there, we started DJ’ing our high school parties, throwing our own backyard parties, and eventually got into clubs and mobile gigs.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Steve Dub: Right now, my setup includes my Pioneer Rev7 paired with my trusted KC12 speakers, which have been a game-changer for me. They deliver clean, powerful sound that fills the room (or outdoor space) without distortion. I also have a Humpter B3 booth, Both Lighting uplights, a Shure QLXD24 mic, along with an EV Everse 8 for a wireless ceremony booth. Everything is optimized for mobility and quick setups.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Steve Dub: My dream setup would involve a fully customized rig with top-tier gear like my Pioneer Rev7, combined with a top-of-the-line PA system—maybe a QSC line array for maximum clarity and punch. I’d also love to integrate an LED wall for visuals and a wireless lighting control system for more immersive shows. And of course, everything would be road-ready and compact for mobile use.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Steve Dub: Besides the KC12 speakers, I’ve recently purchased the Reloop RP7 7″ turntables for my all-7″ vinyl sets. I’ve never stopped DJ’ing all vinyl sets—even when technology from companies like Serato came out, I continued to rock all-vinyl sets and have been dreaming of a 7″ turntable forever.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
Steve Dub:
Pros: You get to meet all kinds of people, travel to different places (I’ll be DJ’ing a wedding in Jamaica soon), and no two gigs are the same. You also have full creative control over your setup and vibe.
Cons: The gear load-in/load-out can be exhausting, and there’s a lot of pressure to be a one-person crew—tech, talent, and logistics all rolled into one. Also, weather and power issues can be unpredictable for outdoor events.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Steve Dub: Definitely, people requesting a song and then leaving the dance floor when it plays. Also, folks trying to put drinks on or near the gear or leaning over the table like it’s a bar top. Respect the booth!
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Steve Dub: It’s a balancing act. Weekend gigs mean I miss some family time, but I try to schedule things to still have quality time at home. That said, it’s also given me a flexible lifestyle and a creative outlet, which helps me be more present and fulfilled in other areas of life.
