This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Michelle Koho Miller (a.k.a. DJ RunDat) from Arcata, California.
DJ RunDat is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Michelle Koho Miller (a.k.a. DJ RunDat) is a mobile DJ, based out of Arcata, California.
For Michelle Koho Miller, being a mobile DJ is all about versatility and connection. From weddings in the redwoods to beach bars in Thailand and festival stages around the world, she thrives on curating energy and adapting to every unique setting. With a focus on creating unforgettable experiences, she brings her passion for music and people into every performance, turning each event into something special.
Her journey as a DJ has also intertwined with her life as a mother, author, and entrepreneur, allowing her to raise her children while staying rooted in the music scene. What began with one QSC K10 speaker over a decade ago has grown into a career that spans festivals, expos, a published book, a podcast, and even a family legacy as her daughter, DJ Milly Rockx, joins her behind the decks. For Michelle, DJing isn’t just a career – it’s a lifestyle built on connection, perseverance, and sharing knowledge with the next generation.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Miller regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Michelle Koho Miller: Being a mobile DJ means bringing the party anywhere. It’s about versatility, whether I’m in the redwoods for a wedding, at a beach bar in Thailand, or on stage at a major festival. It’s the freedom to create unforgettable moments for people in all kinds of settings. For me, it’s not just about pressing play – it’s about curating the energy, adapting to the space, and connecting with the crowd on a personal level no matter where I am.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Miller: Right now, my setup is built around reliability and great sound. I primarily use my Pioneer DDJ-FLX10 controller, which gives me the flexibility I need to mix across genres, from weddings to reggae festivals to electronic music. For sound reinforcement, I have always used QSC’s, starting out with just one K10 over a decade ago. I currently use QSC CP 8’s and 12’s speakers paired with a light, easy-to-carry Electro-Voice ELX200-12SP sub. I also use hydraulic speaker stands that make setup easier for some of my younger students. I also have several backup setups like my battery-powered system for off-grid events, which includes a Denon PrimeGo and an Electro-Voice 8 that also powers my wireless mics. I always travel with backups and extra cables, because as a mobile DJ, you’ve got to be ready for anything.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Miller: My dream setup would combine the portability I need for weddings and events with the full festival experience – think VOID Acoustics sound system, a custom festival-grade booth, and high-end lighting and visuals that transform any space into an immersive environment. And of course, a team alongside me so I can focus purely on the music and connection with the crowd.
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Miller: Being a DJ has shaped my whole journey as a mom and entrepreneur. I started my first business while pregnant, selling clothing at reggae shows to stay connected to the music scene. DJing has led me to experiences that I never thought I would have, like being a top-selling best author with my self-published book, How to Start a DJ Business, a podcast host, emceeing DJ expos and festivals, and so much more. DJing allowed me to raise my kids while still following my passion. Now my daughter Milani, aka DJ Milly Rockx, is DJing alongside me – it’s become a family legacy. The balance isn’t always easy; late nights and travel can be tough – but the freedom it provides has given me more freedom and time with my loved ones than a traditional job would have.
DJ LIFE: What is the most important life lesson you have gained from your experience as a DJ?
Miller: The biggest lesson is that connection is everything, and music is the best medicine. Music is just the tool – what matters is how you make people feel. Whether it’s two people exchanging vows, a crowd of thousands at a festival, or a group of kids dancing at a school party, the joy and energy you create comes back to you tenfold. I’ve also learned that perseverance pays off – if you stay authentic, keep showing up, and keep evolving, you can build not just a career, but a lifestyle you love and a legacy to last forever. I also think it’s important to give back and share your knowledge with other aspiring DJs. I have been blessed with an opportunity to have my own DJ school, and I will share more about that in my next book!
