Christopher “DJ iShine” Summers [Mobile Monday Spotlight]

This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight shines on Christopher “DJ iShine” Summers of iShine Music Production, from Columbus, Ohio.

Christopher “DJ iShine” Summers is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight, the Owner and Main DJ-MC for iShine Music Production, based out of Columbus, Ohio.

What started as a high school accident for Summers in 2005 became a lifelong calling. After a song he recorded in a school studio unexpectedly went public among classmates, he felt exposed – but instead of backing down, he leaned in. Guided by upperclassmen who DJed school events, he absorbed everything he could, eventually carving out his own lane and launching a career that now spans nearly two decades. Today, DJ iShine is a full-time mobile DJ, creating curated experiences for weddings and events across the region with a signature setup and professional polish.

For Summers, mobile DJing isn’t just about music – it’s about freedom, family, and finding purpose. It’s how he supports his loved ones and expresses his creativity, bringing intention to every event and continually raising the bar. His journey recently hit a turning point after the birth of his son, prompting him to fully rebrand iShine Music Production into a luxury DJ brand – and empowering his wife to leave the corporate world behind. Now, with an eye on destination weddings and a heart rooted in authenticity, DJ iShine proves that when you follow your calling, the rewards go far beyond the booth.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Summers regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…

DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
    Christopher “DJ iShine” Summers:
I got my start back in 2005 during high school. I was in boarding school and kind of fell into it by accident. I recorded a song in the school’s studio just for fun, and somehow my classmates got ahold of it and sent it out to the whole school. I was mortified at the time—so much so that I considered leaving. But instead, I leaned in and thought, “Let me actually learn how to do this for real.”

I connected with an upperclassman and his roommate who were known for throwing campus events—after-game parties, ice cream socials, you name it. I learned alongside them, soaking up everything I could. Eventually, I found my own style and lane, and the rest is history.

DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
    Summers:
It means freedom, independence, and connection. Being a mobile DJ allows me to create meaningful experiences while working with amazing couples, clients, and fellow pros—both locally and beyond. This is my full-time career, how I support my family, and I treat it with that same level of care every single day. I love showing up with intention, doing my best, and always finding ways to level up—for my clients, my team, and my family.

DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
    Summers:
My current setup includes two Evolve 30Ms, a white Chauvet GigBAR, a Rane One, and my custom ADJ pop-up booth. It’s a signature look that sets me apart visually and sonically. I wanted a clean, professional setup that still felt unique to me—and I’m really proud of it.

For ceremonies, I love using the Everse 8, and for larger or supplemental sound, my EV ZLX 15s are my go-to. Every piece in my setup is there for a reason, and it reflects the experience I aim to deliver.

DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
    Summers:
Pros? Meeting new people (I’m an extrovert), curating unforgettable moments, and getting to do what I love since 2005. Being able to provide for my family while doing something I’m passionate about is the biggest win. Setting my own schedule and running my business the way I want—those are dreams I’ve worked hard to make real. I’ve been full-time for 7–8 years now, and I’m grateful every day.

Cons? Post-gig fatigue is real. You have to prioritize self-care to stay sharp and healthy. My survival kit includes Core water, cinnamon gum, blue-light lense glasses, concert-grade earplugs—and a post-gig meal of boxed mac & cheese or a stop at Wendy’s or White Castle.

Slow seasons are another challenge, especially during Ohio winters and parts of summer. I usually counter that by booking further south in the state, and I’m excited to eventually dive into destination weddings too.

DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal and family life?
    Summers:
It’s reshaped everything. After our son was born in late 2024, my wife went on FMLA—and it hit me hard that I wasn’t ready to fully cover her income. That moment pushed me to scale smarter and faster. When she returned to work and things didn’t go well with her employer, I made the call: after 15 years in corporate, she didn’t need to go back.

That decision lit a fire under me to rebrand and rebuild iShine Music Production as a talent-focused, luxury-level DJ company. It hasn’t been easy, but I’d rather my wife and son have the freedom and support I had when she was holding things down for me early on. This year alone has brought milestones I never imagined—like speaking to DJ LIFE Mag.

DJ LIFE: What’s the biggest life lesson you’ve learned from being a DJ?
    Summers:
If you’re meant to do this—do it.

There were many times when I doubted myself when I was younger because I didn’t “look” like a typical DJ. I thought maybe I should just keep it as a side gig or get a more traditional job—especially once I became a dad. But the truth is, I know I’m called to this.

I’m here to create, inspire, and grow—even if I don’t fully know what the future looks like. What I do know is that every time I show up at a gig, I get to live out my purpose. That’s a blessing I don’t take for granted.
