DJ Gary Lucca is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Gary Lucca is a mobile DJ, based out of Savannah, Georgia and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. For Gary Lucca, DJing didn’t begin as a grand plan – it started as a hobby that steadily evolved into a full-fledged profession rooted in connection and the joy of helping people celebrate life’s biggest milestones.
After getting his start playing bars and clubs in the early 2000s, he discovered a deeper calling in 2010 when he was asked to DJ a friend’s wedding. That experience reshaped his trajectory, revealing how meaningful it could be to contribute to one of the most important days in a couple’s life.
Since going full time in 2016, Lucca has built a multifaceted mobile career spanning weddings, corporate events, and select nightlife gigs, balancing performance with entrepreneurship and family life. Known for his clean setups, carefully curated gear, and attention to detail, he approaches each event with both technical precision and a service mindset.
When DJ LIFE spoke with Lucca regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Gary Lucca: I started DJing as a hobby and landed a few bar & club gigs in 2003. After being asked to DJ a friend’s wedding in 2010, I fell in love with DJing weddings and being a part of one of the most important days in a couple’s lives. I started DJing full time in 2016, where now I DJ weddings, corporate events, and still dabble in bars & clubs providing dance music and karaoke.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Lucca: My current DJ setup includes 4 QSC KC12 speakers (2 black & 2 white), Pioneer DDJ-FLX10, Shure SLXD4 microphones, Blizzard Weather System or JMAZ Vers Flex Bar for dance floor lights. I use several different facades based on client wants & needs.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Lucca: My QSC KC12 speakers are my most favorite new gear that I own. I purchased a pair of the black columns a year ago and just purchased a set of white column speakers so that I can match any setup color scheme. I love how crisp and clear the sound is compared to speakers I used to use in the past. The rich bass from the subwoofers are a nice bonus.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ? & How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Lucca: The biggest pro of being a mobile DJ would be the freedom I have of being my own boss and setting my schedule. I have a lot of flexibility during the week and doing things around the house for my family. Some of the cons would be working mostly evenings and weekends and missing some of that family time as well.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Lucca: Some of my DJ-related pet peeves include making sure my wires are nice and neat and hidden. I don’t like any clutter being visible. Photographers & videographers that set their bags and cases down next to my clean setup and make it look messy.
