This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Carlos Bates (aka DJ A.I.) from Indianapolis, IN.
DJ A.I. is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Carlos Bates (aka DJ A.I.) is based out of Indianapolis, IN. For Bates, he brings a producer’s mindset and a mobile DJ’s work ethic to every event he touches. What started behind the scenes in the studio evolved into a full-fledged DJ career after a push from a trusted friend, and today he’s delivering high-energy performances for crowds of all sizes.
For DJ A.I., mobile DJing is about creating moments that last forever, balancing technical skill with real-world experience, and showing up prepared – both musically and professionally. With a streamlined, purpose-built setup and a strong respect for family, scheduling, and craft, he embodies the modern mobile DJ who treats every gig with both passion and precision.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Bates regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
DJ A.I.: Being a mobile DJ means everything to me because I get to provide forever memories. Whether it’s a wedding, a party, or a major event, those moments last a lifetime.
DJ LIFE: What does your current DJ setup look like?
DJ A.I.: My current setup is a MacBook, Pioneer DDJ-REV7, QSC KC12 speakers, and Sennheiser microphones.
DJ LIFE: What’s your dream DJ setup?
DJ A.I.: Honestly, my dream setup is what I’m using now. Before the KC12s, I was running K12.2s with a KS118 subwoofer. The KC12 is my favorite piece of gear—it saves setup time, and I don’t have to lift a massive sub anymore.
DJ LIFE: What are the pros and cons of being a DJ?
DJ A.I.: The biggest pro is that it never feels like work. I can DJ by myself or for thousands of people and get the same feeling every time. The con? People thinking my speakers are tables and setting their drinks on them.
DJ LIFE: What’s one of your biggest DJ pet peeves?
DJ A.I.: People trying to have full conversations while I’m mixing. I’m not just pressing play—the music doesn’t stop, so I can’t stop either.
DJ LIFE: How has DJing impacted your personal life?
DJ A.I.: DJing has made me very schedule oriented. Family always comes first, and my calendar keeps me grounded and organized.
DJ LIFE: How did you get started DJing?
DJ A.I.: I was a producer first. A friend who ran a club “retired” from DJing and kept telling me I needed to learn. After about three years of him pushing me, I finally bought a Pioneer DDJ-SB1—and the rest is history.
