This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Chris Bailey of Kramer Events from San Luis Obispo, California.
Chris Bailey is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, Chris is a mobile DJ with Kramer Events, based out of San Luis Obispo, California. As a DJ who entered the craft by chance and stayed for the connection, Bailey has built a career defined by adaptability, meaningful relationships, and a deep love for creating unforgettable moments.
Since first stepping behind the decks in the early 90s, he has embraced the freedom of mobile DJing – bringing music wherever the celebration happens – and values the lifelong friendships and family-like bonds formed through the industry. With a streamlined setup he trusts, a focus on reading the room, and a passion for helping couples shape the soundtrack to their most important day, Bailey continues to balance creativity, community, and family time in a profession that demands both presence and heart.

When DJ LIFE spoke with Bailey regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Chris Bailey: A friend asked me to help him DJ a college party. I just graduated High School. It seemed fun. I have been doing it ever since 1993.
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Bailey: Being a mobile DJ means different things to different people, but at its core, it’s about bringing music, energy, and atmosphere to people—wherever they are. For me, being a mobile DJ:
• Freedom and flexibility: You’re not tied to a single venue. You go where the party is—weddings, corporate events, private parties.
• Creative control: You curate and mix music based on the vibe of each event and the crowd’s energy. It’s about reading the room and adapting on the fly.
• Connection through music: You get to help create unforgettable moments, whether it’s the first dance at a wedding or getting a crowd to erupt on the dance floor.
• Adaptability: Each event brings new challenges—different acoustics, lighting, power setups, and audiences. You become a master of improvisation.
DJ LIFE: What is the most important life lesson you have gained from your experience as a DJ?
Bailey: I have developed friendships for life being in the event industry. These friends I care about and play a role in my life in many ways. They are like family to me and my family. Bonds that can’t be broken.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Bailey: I use a Rane 4 controller with Serato DJ Pro. Shure QLXD wireless mic system with a KC12 speaker set up. I love the simplicity of the set up. The clarity of the sound and the 3 way sound the KC12 produces.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Bailey: I love my set up now. It is easy to load, set up and looks great. Small footprint at venues.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Bailey: The Rane 4 and the KC12 speakers.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
Bailey: Pros: Being a part of a couples wedding day celebration. Getting to know them.
Cons: Weekend work. Most of my friends and family work Monday–Friday. I work most weekends. Finding a balance is important.
DJ LIFE: Do you have any DJ-related pet peeves?
Bailey: When a couple doesn’t care to put the time into picking out music. I can’t care about the success of their event more than them. I am referring to weddings mostly.
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Bailey: Time. Time with family and friends.
