SOFI TUKKER Releases Silky New Album, ‘butter’

The GRAMMY-nominated duo delivers a genre-defying LP, featuring Seu Jorge, Liniker, MC Bola, Channel Tres, Kah-Lo, The Knows & more.

GRAMMY-nominated electronic duo SOFI TUKKER have unveiled butter, a silky and lavish new album that finds the globally renowned pair diving deep into the sounds of Brazil. Serving as a soulful, jazz-infused companion to their 2024 album BREAD, butter is a tender love letter to Brazilian music and culture, as well as a decade-long dream realized by the group’s Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern. The duo will celebrate this milestone with a special butter set at the historic Newport Jazz Festival on August 1.

Produced by Latin-GRAMMY winner Marcio Arantes and recorded in Brazil, butter drips with warmth and authenticity. The album boasts an all-star lineup of collaborators, including Seu Jorge, Rael, Silva, Mari Merenda & Sophia Ardessore, MC Bola & DJ Gao, Channel Tres, Kah-Lo, The Knocks, and Liniker.

The album’s first single, “Bread (butter version)” featuring Seu Jorge, reimagines the bold energy of the original track with a breezy intimacy that defines the entire project. It’s an album full of rich textures, organic instrumentation, and a beautiful fusion of genres, from MPB and bossa nova to bolero, samba-reggae, and even hints of bachata and reggae.

For Soph and Tuck, the creation of butter was more than just a musical experiment – it was a personal journey. “Tuck and I started the band with a promise that we’d one day return to Brazil in a more meaningful way,” says Sophie. That vision became reality thanks to Arantes’ expert curation and a talented group of local musicians including Julio “Fejuca” Caesar on guitar, Daniel Conceição on percussion, Lulinha Alencar on accordion, and Will Bone on horns.

And it’s safe to say the finished product is a completely different kind of SOFI TUKKER record – one made with live takes, real instruments, and flowing compositions – rather than the looped, punchy EDM structures they’ve become known for. A docuseries chronicling the making of the album, with behind-the-scenes footage and intimate reflections, is also available now, here.

SOFI TUKKER continues to break boundaries beyond the studio. With over three billion streams and Platinum and Gold records across five continents, the duo has proven their global appeal. Their recent 2024 headline tour was a triumph, along with standout performances at Coachella, Bonnaroo, and StageCoach at Diplo’s Honky Tonk. With butter, SOFI TUKKER expands their artistic universe once again – and this time with a warm, organic, and blissfully Brazilian soul.
