Kelly Reverb Drops Electrifying Two-Track EP [Interview]

Kelly Reverb and Chad LeMans unite for 2-track EP, including “La Isla Bonita (Madonna On Acid)” & “Coming Back.”

On Thursday, June 27, veteran DJ and producer Kelly Reverb teams up with Chad LeMans for a much-anticipated two-track release. The EP features “La Isla Bonita (Madonna On Acid)” and “Coming Back,” showcasing their innovative take on house music.

Kelly Reverb, a Dallas native best known for his electro/breaks pioneer work with Southside Reverb and funky house styles on his label, Lone Star Records, brings decades of experience to this project. He first made waves as a resident DJ at The Lizard Lounge and has since performed at iconic venues like Home Base, Tunnel NYC, and The Clevelander Miami. His music has been featured in the film Blade, and he’s shared stages with legends like Carl Cox and Dada Life.

Inspired by his experiences during Miami Music Week and a Madonna concert in Dallas, Kelly’s cover of Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” blends Latin/Afro-house influences with his signature style. This track, along with the Latin-infused “Coming Back,” promises to be a crowd-pleaser.

Kelly’s journey has seen its share of ups and downs. After struggling with alcoholism and nearly giving up on music, he met Chad LeMans, a sound engineer and fellow recovering addict. Their collaboration rekindled Kelly’s passion for production, leading to the formation of his independent label, Lone Star Records. Together, they’ve released tracks like “Closer” and “Flashback.”

Beyond music, Kelly and Chad co-host the podcast This Pink Cloud, providing resources and raising awareness for those dealing with substance use disorders and mental health issues. Kelly reflects, “Our partnership flourished as we used our experiences with addiction to shed light on mental health and recovery. We were making chart-topping beats and making a positive impact in the community.”

With their new EP, Kelly Reverb and Chad LeMans continue to push the boundaries of electronic music while making a positive difference in their community. Their journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of music.

As he geared up for his latest work to release, DJ LIFE caught up with Kelly Reverb to discuss his journey, road to his new EP, and what’s to come…

DJ LIFE: When did you first become a fan of dance music?

Kelly Reverb: The Acid House come up in the late 80’s

DJ LIFE: Who first inspired you to start DJing and producing?

Kelly Reverb: Todd Terry & Hardkiss production wise. “Go-Go” Mike DuPriest from Dallas’ version of Studio 54, the world famous “Stark Club” and DJ Rob Vaughn were definitely my DJ heroes (look them up, worth it!)

DJ LIFE: What gear did you first start out with as a DJ? How about now?

Kelly Reverb: Two Technics SL-1200MK2, RANE MP 24 (at the club)… at the house, anything I could get my hands on!! Realistic 32-1200B Stereo Mixing Console from Radio Shack with one belt drive turntable, and one digital Technics SL-1500.

DJ LIFE: Tell us more about your DAW, go-to plug-ins, gear, etc.

Kelly Reverb: Ableton Suite 11 (still haven’t updated to 12) lol… Anything from Infected Mushroom, L1 & L3 compressor.

DJ LIFE: Everybody loves a great comeback story, which you have with your return to music. Can you tell us what ignited that spark in you to start creating again and what was your first creation after becoming sober?

Kelly Reverb: The FREE time and CLARITY you have when you’re not hungover! 100% First track back: “Must Get Burned”

DJ LIFE: We’re digging your latest releases. How did your Madonna “La Isla Bonita” edit came to be and why?

Kelly Reverb: Went to Miami Music Week (spent way too  much on a hotel) , tons of afro house vibes (HUGEL, Vampire Sex, Bonitos, etc.), then the night I came back home (Dallas), I had tickets to go see Madonna – and bingo-bango, there you have it

DJ LIFE: Some say they prefer collaborative relationships. Would you’re stronger together when it comes to your work with Chad LeMans?

Kelly Reverb:  Chad brings the “Vangelis” side to our production, and is the go-to computer whiz, plus I hate him! Lol

DJ LIFE: What’s next for you with regards to new music, collaborations, upcoming gigs, and your record label?

Kelly Reverb: Super stoked! Inked a deal with Dim Mak/New Noise (Steve Aoki’s label) for a July 30th release “Speechless” (nu disco vibes) , have an original EP coming out on Lone Star Records called Dark Side and Government, and a Depeche Mode cover of “It’s No Good,” just signed with Nexus Artist Mgmt, and gigs TBD.
