This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight, presented by QSC, shines on Jake Alexander (aka DJ Boost) from York, Pennsylvania.
Jake Alexander (aka DJ Boost) is this week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday spotlight. Presented by QSC, DJ/Emcee with Klock Entertainment, Jake Alexander is based out of York, Pennsylvania. For Jake Alexander, better known as DJ Boost, the path into DJing started with a simple neighborhood hustle and a deep love of music. While running a small mowing and dog-walking business as a teenager, an opportunity to help set up equipment for a wedding in Washington, D.C. sparked something bigger.
Already experimenting with music production at the time, seeing the dancefloor fill and witnessing the joy that music brought to people throughout the night shifted his perspective entirely. The experience opened the door to the world of live events and introduced him to mentor DJ Mic Marvelous, who helped guide him through the early stages of DJing and the business side of the industry.
Fast forward to today: Alexander approaches mobile DJing with a strong sense of responsibility and appreciation for the role he plays in people’s most important celebrations. Traveling to events, building connections with crowds, and delivering unique mixes has become a core part of his routine, while the experience has also helped him develop valuable life skills – even beyond music.
When DJ LIFE spoke with Alexander regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Jake Alexander: I have always had a love for music, and when I was about 16, I was running a mowing and dog-walking business in my neighborhood. One of my clients asked if I wanted to help him set up some equipment and assist at a wedding in DC. I was producing at the time, but after seeing that dancefloor fill and the reactions to good music and the happiness it brought to people by the end of the night, my whole life changed. DJ Mic Marvelous would become my first mentor and manager in DJing and the music business.
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Alexander: It means I have the responsibility and privilege of turning someone’s important day into something unforgettable. Being able to travel out and showcase a one-of-one mix with a crowd I am vibing with is why I do this. I couldn’t imagine a year going by where I am not traveling on weekends to get to events and set up. Being a mobile DJ has taught me more life skills than many other jobs I’ve had, and I am grateful to have found a career like DJing.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Alexander: As of now, I use QSC K.12 tops, and when needed, I will bring out the TouchMix-8 with the KS118 to bring that full sound to the celebration.
DJ LIFE: What would be your dream DJ setup?
Alexander: At some point, I am looking at investing in the QSC KC12s and would love to rock that with a custom-fit DDJ-FLX10 standalone table. I think lights are an important part of building the party atmosphere a lot of the time, but I am a big fan of moving lights on stands and uplights that move with the sound nicely.
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Alexander: It’s definitely a commitment you have to make, but it’s possible to make time for family and doing things you enjoy like playing video games, producing, and pulling songs. It’s opened doors for me to learn new skills, meet new mentors, and maintain relationships with my family and friends.
