In a joint venture for future output, the deal valued at over $55 million includes more than 4,000 songs from artists like Skrillex, REZZ, Noisia & more.

Create Music Group (CMG), a powerhouse in the music industry, has acquired the catalogs of electronic music icon deadmau5 and his renowned label, mau5trap, in a deal exceeding $55 million. This acquisition includes the rights to over 4,000 songs and extends beyond past works, as CMG and deadmau5 will collaborate on future releases through a joint venture. The move cements CMG’s role in shaping the future of electronic music while ensuring deadmau5’s creative vision continues to thrive.

With a career spanning over 25 years, deadmau5, also known as Joel Zimmerman, has built a legacy not only through his groundbreaking music and live performances, but also as a staunch advocate for artist rights. Founded in 2007, his label mau5trap has been instrumental in launching major dance music acts like Skrillex, REZZ, and Noisia. More than just a label, mau5trap has evolved into a movement, known for its innovation, distinctive branding, and dedication to nurturing the next wave of electronic music talent.

As part of the partnership, Create Music Group (CMG) plans to revitalize the mau5trap catalog through remastered releases, exclusive content, and strategic marketing to introduce deadmau5’s legacy to new audiences. The collaboration will also explore brand partnerships, licensing opportunities, and emerging media platforms like gaming, VR, and live streaming to generate additional revenue. Eric Nguyen, CMG’s Senior Vice President of Global Corporate Development and M&A, played a key role in securing the deal, with legal support from Paul Hastings LLP for CMG and LaPolt Law P.C. for deadmau5 and mau5trap.

Jonathan Strauss, co-founder and CEO of Create Music Group commented:

“When deadmau5 put on that helmet, he didn’t just create a brand—he sparked a movement. His vision redefined electronic music, pushing boundaries and reshaping the industry. From the earliest days of Create Music Group, [co-founder and COO] Alexandre Williams and I had the privilege of working alongside Joel and his business partner Dean Wilson, witnessing firsthand the evolution of an icon. Now, as the stewards of deadmau5 and mau5trap’s legendary catalog, we inherit a legacy that changed music forever. Joel’s influence reaches far beyond sound—his mastery bridges music, gaming, and technology, inspiring a new generation to think bigger. This is more than an acquisition; it’s a responsibility.

    Joel Zimmerman (deadmau5), Founder, mau5trap:

“I have worked closely with Jonathan, Alex and Create for nearly two decades now, building my own career as well as the artists on mau5trap.We didn’t need to look far when we were considering a partner to help get it all to the next level. With Create, I feel the music is going to reach more.”

Dean Wilson, deadmau5 manager and business partner:

“Over the last 20 years, fueled by Joel’s creative and entrepreneurial ambitions, we have built one of the strongest brand names in electronic music. To have partnered with Create, who have worked so closely with us over the years on our journey, ensures that the next two decades will be every bit as exciting for Joel and everyone on the mau5trap team as we work to expand our legacy even further.”
