This week’s DJ LIFE Mobile Monday DJ spotlight shines on Shani Barnett (Chitown Shani) from Chicago.
Involved in the entertainment industry for more than 25 years, Shani is a full-time DJ with experience not only behind the decks, but also behind-the-scenes with educational seminars, presentations, and trade show performances, including the annual DJX Show in Atlantic City. Shani’s entertainment company, Shani Barnett Productions, out of Chicago, has led her to work with some of the biggest names in music, sports, fashion, and corporate events.
When DJ LIFE sat down with Shani to discuss what being a mobile DJ means to her, go-to gear, and dream setup, it went a little something like this…
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Chitown Shani: Being a mobile DJ can mean a lot of things depending on your perspective and passion, but for me it means it is a love for music and bringing people together to create memories that will last a lifetime long after my last song has faded away.
DJ LIFE: What does your current DJ setup consist of?
Shani: I have a couple different setups depending on my clients needs, but mostly when I go out for my corporate and branding events I use DAS Altea DUO 20A speakers, one of my 4-channel controllers, and there will be some moving heads for the dance floor!
DJ LIFE: How about your ideal setup?
Shani: My ideal DREAM setup would be… my tech crew setting up everything all the time!!!! And I will always walk in dressed and sound-checked and ready for the party to start!! HA!! You know – you walk off the elevator, the planner hands you the updated timeline (which hasn’t changed), while you are walking towards the room, you hear the end of sound check and lights, everything is taped down and looking good. The room is the perfect temperature; your crew is ready to rock!!
OK, I CAN DREAM!!!!! But I do have a great tech/assistant who does set me up and breaks me down!
DJ LIFE: Can you share some of your go-to gear or equipment with us?
Shani: I love the App for the DAS Speakers because I can control the speakers through them, especially when I have 4 speakers running in two rooms — and when I have to lower the sound or even turn a speaker off completely during a corporate event and still be DJing. It’s a great tool!
