In our recent sitdown with Cris, we dive deeper into his setup and favorite gear, inspirations, and the life lessons he’s picked up along the way.
When DJ LIFE spoke with Cris Cruz regarding all things mobile DJ, here’s how it went down…
DJ LIFE: How did you get started as a DJ?
Cris Cruz: My journey into DJing began with a deep passion for music and entertainment. At just 11 years old in 1996, I started learning the craft, inspired by legendary scratch artists like DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Qbert, Mix Master Mike, and DJ Shortkut. The thrill of blending tracks and mastering techniques fueled my dedication, leading to my first paid gig—a 10th birthday party where I earned $25.
In my early 20s, I transitioned into the vibrant club scene of Chicagoland, performing at iconic venues like Dragonfly, Bella Lounge, Republic, Wet, Waterhouse, and Rebel in Wrigleyville. By 2011, my focus shifted to mobile entertainment, and in 2014, Red Velvet DJ was born, based in Chicago, IL. Over the years, I cultivated my brand, expanding into weddings, corporate events, and beyond.
Seeking an escape from Chicago’s brutal winters, my wife and I visited San Diego in 2018. We instantly fell in love with the city and its surrounding areas, returning three more times in the following year. Oceanside became a special place for us, as we tied the knot right by the pier before officially calling Southern California home in 2019. Now, we’re thriving in Temecula, CA with our two kids and two dogs, enjoying life’s simple pleasures.
DJ LIFE: What does being a mobile DJ mean to you?
Cruz: Being a mobile DJ is like being the architect of unforgettable vibes, transforming any space into an electrifying experience. It’s about weaving music into the fabric of every celebration, connecting people through rhythm and energy. Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate affair, or a festival, my passion is curating the perfect soundtrack—turning ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.
DJ LIFE: Can you tell us about your current DJ setup?
Cruz: I’m currently running four white QSC KC12 Column Loudspeakers, though I rarely need more than two. The extra pair is perfect for side or delay fill when needed. My setup also features a Bunn Command Center paired with a Pioneer DDJ-1000SRT, along with Ape Labs Mini 2.0 and Stick XLs. The white KC12s seamlessly enhance the boutique aesthetic, making them an ideal match for the upscale weddings I specialize in.
DJ LIFE: What would your perfect or dream setup look like?
Cruz: I have my dream setup =)
DJ LIFE: Do you have any favorite or new gear that you’re currently using?
Cruz: Other than my amazing sounding QSC KC12’s, I’m loving my Shure SLXD-5 & SLXD-3 wireless system. With the rechargeable batteries, I can have a reliable, portable, and great sounding solution for wireless audio.
DJ LIFE: What are some of the biggest pros and cons of being a mobile DJ?
Cruz:
Pros: The freedom to perform in diverse locations, connect with incredible people, and be an essential part of life’s most memorable celebrations. Each event is one-of-a-kind, and I thrive on the challenge of reading the crowd and keeping the energy alive.
Cons: The setup and breakdown process can be labor-intensive, and events often stretch into 12–16-hour days. Scheduling time off is tricky, especially during peak wedding season in the summer, making vacations a rare luxury.
DJ LIFE: How has being a DJ impacted your personal/family life?
Cruz: DJing has opened doors to amazing experiences—from performing at high-profile events to creating connections with many talented wedding industry pros. Yet, juggling weekend gigs and family life is always a delicate balance. My wife and kids are my greatest supporters, and I make it a priority to cherish family time while continuing to build and elevate my brand.
DJ LIFE: What is the most important life lesson you have gained from your experience as a DJ?
Cruz: Attitude and Adaptability is the heartbeat of every event. No two gatherings are alike, and the ability to pivot—whether it’s adjusting to diverse crowds, tackling unexpected technical hiccups, rolling with last-minute changes, while keeping a positive attitude—is essential. Through it all, I’ve gained patience, resilience, and the art of staying calm under pressure.
