Continuing to pump new life into the world of electronic dance music with his distinctive take on future pop, Cyran is riding quite the hot streak as of late following the releases of “Take You Where It’s Sunny,” “Forever Far Away” and now, “Figure You Out.”
With these singles being a taste of what’s to come from his forthcoming EP, the Circus Records favorite has also become one of the many artists who have found success on TikTok which means in addition to promoting his upcoming body of work, he has to make time and get creative for the world of TikTok. The days of simply creating and performing your music are long behind us, there are a bunch of platforms out there that can help grow your fanbase when used correctly.
Still buzzing off the release of his recent single “Figure You Out,” we took the time to chat with Cyran to get to know him a little better and discuss what it’s like being an artist in 2022.
Being an artist is no longer just spending time in the studio and touring, having a constant internet presence is now part of the game. What is your opinion on the current state of being a creative?
Cyran: The current state of being creative is great for artists, it’s one of the first times (in my lifetime) that you can reach millions of people and hope to entertain/inspire them instantly. I’ve learned you don’t need a “constant” internet presence but rather just an appearance every now and then works great. I think art is like anything else in life, in moderation it’s great and valued.
You’ve had great success on TikTok, how do you manage to separate that content from the rest of your path as an artist?
Cyran: I try to showcase the fun side of music on TikTok. There’s the singer/songwriter side of music and then there’s the performing/artist side. For me personally, I try to showcase the performing artist side on TikTok (and all social media). For example, if you watch American idol or Americas got talent, 10 people can sing or play the same song, but it can sound really different based on each artist’s interpretation, this is what keeps it interesting and entertaining! I think that’s the same approach for social media (just keep people entertained).
What words of wisdom do you have for up-and-coming producers looking to make their presence felt but feel overwhelmed having to juggle all these platforms?
Cyran: I would tell them to create something that will connect/resonate with people. One thing I learned is if people enjoy what you’re doing in real life they’ll probably enjoy it on social media. For example, if you go out on the sidewalk and start singing and people gather around and enjoy it, if you were to video that and post it on social media you’ll get a similar reaction of people enjoying it. Also if you feel overwhelmed just take a break. I’ve made some of my favorite songs/mixes on weeks when I was taking a break from social media.
In the studio, what’s your set-up?
Cyran: I don’t really have a studio but I do have a bunch of keyboards and synths that I picked up and record with! I recently got a vintage Juno 106 and Yamaha DX7. I’ve also got lots of plug-ins too: Nexus, Native Instruments Komplete, sylenth, these are all really great for making songs and beats.
What’s your creation process in the studio?
Cyran: I usually play piano and come up with a melody and then build my songs around that. I have to be able to physically play the melody or else I don’t really vibe with it. I then will record it in Ableton via midi and find some sounds I like and build it up from there. Vocals are usually the last thing I do, I will write lyrics and then try and find a rhythm and melody that works with the song.
When you have a rough week or hit a wall creatively, how do you get yourself back on track?
Cyran: I usually try and do something else that I enjoy like golfing or playing a video game. I’ve found that the secret to creativity is that it is never-ending. You just have to discover what will inspire you next. Also, I try to remind myself that there are no limits. Usually, when I hit a creative wall it’s because I am boxing myself into what I think I should be doing as opposed to just working freely and allow my creativity to flow naturally.
Tell us a little about how your recent single “Figure You Out” came together.
Cyran: “Figure You Out” is about being in a confusing relationship. It’s when you really like the person but are not sure if they like you back the same amount. It’s also got a cool dance beat behind it. The melody cycles through a few different sounds and synths which makes it really unique!
2022 is just getting started, what can the world expect from Cyran in the coming months?
Cyran: I plan on writing music that makes you feel good and nostalgic. Music that makes you feel a certain type of way is what I’m trying to create! I will also be playing lots of pianos and synths!
